weight management
Welcome to the Weight Management Program from Baylor Family Medicine, a program
that helps you reduce your weight and improve your health for life
through simple, everyday tips, techniques and nutritional guidelines.
The Weight Management Program teaches you small changes that will make a big difference
in your weight and your overall health. You’ll look better, feel better, increase
your energy level, and may reduce your risk of developing weight-related chronic
diseases such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and cardiovascular
disease.
Based on Proven Health and Medical Information
Unlike many weight-loss programs, the Weight Management Program at Baylor Family
Medicine was developed based on medically and evidence-based health information.
There are no fad diets, no special foods to buy, no long-term contracts and no financial
penalties for any temporary setbacks. The emphasis is on education.
Designed to Help Anyone Lose Weight
The Weight Management Program is designed for anyone who needs to lose weight. It
is an ideal option for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more, or anyone
suffering from weight-related health issues.
As with any weight-loss program, we recommend all participants consult with their
physician before starting the Weight Management Program. Baylor Family Medicine
has physicians available for immediate appointments and a convenient on-site lab
for any lab work that might be ordered. (Note the cost of a physical is not included
in the Weight Management Program fees.)
A Lifetime of Benefits
The Weight Management Program will help you:
- Conquer calories. You’ll gain a better understanding of:
- where your calories come from;
- how to count them;
- how to reduce the calories you consume; and
- how to balance calories consumed with calories expended.
It’s all about making better food choices. This is the foundation of effective,
lasting weight loss.
- Control portion size. Did you know one serving of meat should be the same
size as a deck of cards? You’ll learn easy-to-remember strategies and everyday
visual clues to help you lose weight – and keep it off – through better
portion control.
- Follow a healthy diet. The program follows a dietary plan based on recommendations
by the American Heart Association, National Cholesterol Education Program and American
Diabetes Association. We’ll help you understand what that means and how to
make it part of your lifetime eating habits.
- Stay on track. Weekly group meetings provide the guidance and support to
keep you on track, including weigh-ins, feedback from the program’s registered
licensed dietician, recipes, guest physicians and timely presentations on nationally
observed health topics.
- Improve your health by being better informed. You’ll hear firsthand
from healthcare professionals (and get valuable resources to take home with you)
about the life-threatening diseases and conditions caused by excess weight, and
the changes you can make in your own lifestyle to reduce your risk and prolong your
life.
For Those Who Want More
The program also offers:
- An optional exercise component, through Americans In Motion (AIM)
- One-on-one nutrition consultations, available upon request
Note the fees for these services are not included in the cost of the Weight Management
Program.
Weekly Meetings
The 45-minute weekly meetings are held Tuesdays from 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. at Baylor
Family Medicine, 3701 Kirby. Free parking is available.
